It's time for another BIG Jelly Jazz session, and it's our 19th Birthday Party on the 19th May (see what we did there!). We return to the The Yellow Room in beautiful south Devon with another killer line up that takes in a dancefloor rockin array of artists covering funk, soul, breaks, jazz, latin, hip hop and psychedlic sounds.

From our humble begininngs at The Quay Club in Plymouth Jelly Jazz has brought the funk and soul to the South West in a continuous run of parties from Bristol to Penzance. We have put on well over 2000 nights featuring an absolutely crazy amount of guest DJs and bands, from superstars to supporting up and coming artists. We've been right there at the beginning for people that are world famous now, acts like Quantic and Sharon Jones played some of their first shows at Jelly. And we'd like to think that we've turned on many thousands of people to the joys of jazz, funk and soul.

We've sorted a delicious line up for the 19th party, covering the funk and soul is Hannah Williams & The Tastemakers, a band that are building such a solid rep for kick ass and dynamic sets. They have just come off tour from supporting Sharon Jones & the Dapkings and will have no doubt picked up a whole load more fans. And headlining with the block rockin beats, breaks and hip hop we have DJ Format with The Simonsound and their amazing live audio visual set for his new LP 'Statement of Intent'. And last but not least, the original Jelly Jazz DJ duo of Pete and Griff will be filling in all the gaps with some Jelly Jazzin classics and funked up party starters.

It's gonna be exciting, soulful and funky as hell... get ready to DANCE!

All profits of this show go to The Dame Hannah Rogers Trust

DJ Format's debut album 'Music For The Mature B-Boy' was one of the slowburn success stories of 2003. An album of soulful, funk-fuelled Hip Hop packed with infectious beats and lyrical dexterity, it delivered the promise of his early releases for 'Mo Wax and Bomb Hip Hop. Received with quiet acclaim in the press it quickly became a word of mouth triumph, going on to establish itself as one of the most successful debut artist albums from the UK alternative/urban scene. The campaign was successful for a number of reasons not least it's supporting batch of three incredible music videos all directed by the then unknown Ruben Fleischer.

The most famous of these being the rapping and breakdancing costumed animals of 'We Know Something You Don't Know' featuring the vocals of Chali 2na and Akil of Jurassic 5 – played out by a shark and tiger respectively on the big screen it is an unforgettable piece of feel good Hip Hop. 'Music For The...' also led to Format supporting (alongside MC Abdominal) Jurassic 5 on their European tour, and through subsequent touring in 2003 establishing Format as one of the hottest live Hip Hop tickets in town culminating in triumphant appearances at the Reading & Leeds festivals of 2004 and worldwide touring taking place in the whole of Europe, North America and Australia.

2005's follow up album 'If You Can't Join 'Em… Beat 'Em' saw Format step up a gear, tightening the loops for a tougher sound. A heavy schedule of acclaimed live shows and DJ sets followed the release throughout 2005/06.

In 2006 Format was asked to contribute to the successful Fabric DJ mix series. Format's 'fabriclive 27' was one of the most well received of the series.  His DJ sets are renowned for their  boundary-crossing selection of the funk, soul, rock & hip-hop and his fabric mix showed of a condensed version of the party set that he's built  a solid reputation on. This was followed up in 2007 by another mix album, this time for the legendary Fania label, applying his signature b-boy style to the world's foremost catalogue of latin music.

By 2008 Format was back in the studio laying down ideas for a new album but found himself frustrated by the limitations of working with samples. He joined forces with old friend Simon James and together they formed The Simonsound. Inspired by music for film & TV 'and 50s & '60s pioneering electronic music , they used Moog synthesizers, tape machines and other vintage studio equipment to create their debut album 'Reverse Engineering' released in 2010. The album was championed by Gilles Peterson but also received massive support in the Hip Hop community from the likes of DJ Spinna, Kenny Dope and Lord Finesse.

It was whilst working on the 'Lungbutters' mix CD in 2008 that Format met Diggers With Gratitude founder member Sureshot La Rock. They immediately hit it off and it wasn't long before Format had persuaded Sureshot to dust off his microphone and start writing rhymes again. By early 2010, they had recorded several songs together and while the finishing touches were being applied to the rest of the new DJ Format album, 'Mr DJ' was released on Project Blue Book, Format's own label.

The new album 'Statement Of Intent' sees vocal collaborations with Edan, Mr Lif and Phill Most Chill as well as the ever present Sureshot La Rock. Format also showcases his wide and varied musical tastes way beyond Hip Hop, exploring Jazz and Blues with The Nostalgia 77 Quintet, spaced-out Electronics with The Simonsound and offering more of his own trademark instrumentals in what is his best work yet.

Hannah Williams
& The Tastemakers

Hannah Williams and Jelly Jazz first did a show together for Winchester University a couple of years ago, and they really blew us away, so at long last we're very pleased to put them on down here in the South West. The daughter of a musically gifted minister, Hannah Williams AKA Deep Soul's Funkiest New Diva was immersed in soulful music from the day she was born. Her first single, an independently released 45, reached out into the soul scene and drew praise from Sharon Jones & The Dap KIngs, Charles Bradley, Craig Charles on his BBC radio show and various labels and promoters.

Hannah and the band were signed by the Italian Record Kicks label just weeks after the release of the vinyl single. Whilst recording the anticipated debut LP, due to finally drop in spring 2012, the outfit crept onto a couple of festival bills, headlining a stage at Larmer Tree and flying to Italy to play the penultimate set on the main stage at Jazz Re:Found. The London-based band have headlined the legendary 100club and supported Sharon Jones & Charles Bradley among others. They set off on a UK tour in May to promote their new single ahead of the festival season, where they are sure to be the biggest surprise act on any European stage.

What's being said about them!
'Blessed' – Sharon Jones (Daptone Records)
'Heavyweight' – Adrian Gibson (AGMP)
'Outstanding' – Craig Charles (BBC Funk & Soul Show)
'A funkbomb waiting to go off!' – Blues & Soul Magazine
'The true heirs to the throne' – London Soul Club
'The funk'  – Charles Bradley (Dunham Records)
'Simply great' – Nick Pozzoli (Record Kicks)
'Tasty' – DJ Pete Isaac (Jelly Jazz)
'A slab of funk dynamite' – Nik Weston (Mukatsuku Records)
'Super heavy… Super tight' – Soul Cellar

Pete Isaac (Jelly Jazz)Pete Isaac

Jelly's creator and resident DJ, he has been at the forefront of jazz and funk in the South West for the last 19 years. Responsible for bringing an unbelievable array of international artists to the region and putting Devon and Cornwall firmly on the funk map of the world. Jelly Jazz has been first to book in the UK acts like Sugarman 3 and Sharon Jones from Daptone as well as promoting legends Lou Donaldson, Lee Fields and Pucho & His Latin Soul Brothers. Not to mention literally hundreds of DJs and bands at well over 2000 events! What does Pete play? Only the very best jazz funk, soul, latin, breaks and beats for dancefloor freaks!

Pete Isaac (Jelly Jazz)DJ Griff

On and off resident DJ at Jelly Jazz (he keeps going away and coming back!), Griff has been there since the 2nd week waaaaaaaaay back in 1993. Along with Pete, he helped define the sound of Jelly Jazz bringing his knowledge of funk and jazz into the mix. This will be his first set with us for a year and a half as he's been touring south America with his new wife and emmersing himself in the culture and music over there. In recent years he's really got into Cumbia and latin music so he could well be dropping a set spiced up with that, but we hope he'll be digging out some sure fire jelly funk n soul classics for this party!
